DO THESE ISSUES SOUND FAMILIAR
"The Equity Act demands a plan" - The fact is that the ethnic balance in the South African IT industry will have to change. And the law does require you to have a plan in place for moving towards full representivity. But that's the easy part – delivering on the plan is a whole lot tougher.
"Window-dressing will leave you exposed" - It's a simple matter to plump up your numbers with loyal under-performers. But window-dressing in order to meet quotas will leave your business dangerously exposed. It's a competitive world out there and you need to invest in your recruits until they are able to support your business in return.
"Buy-in – or grow your own?" - Able staff are hard to find, whatever their colour. This country's history means that able black skills are the scarcest of all – and buying them in is not a sustainable option. Put simply: South Africa has to grow more skills.
"The need to nurture" - It is a fact of life that trainees from previously disadvantaged backgrounds will need more support. Throwing them into a succession of training courses will not equip them for the day-to-day demands of a specialised job. The reality is that they'll need the full-time mentoring of some of your best people.
"But your best people are too busy to take on the mentoring role" - Your best people are fully committed already. Your business probably can't afford to release them into full-time mentoring – even if they want to take on the task.
"Beware the poacher" - Your competitors are also desperate for skills and your newly-developed trainees are fair game. You've invested in them. You need a plan to hold onto them. And Kanimambo can help!
